Murray is located in the Salt Lake Valley and was named for Governor Eli Murray. Considered as one of the largest heavy industry centers within the state, that has now given way to major mercantile sectors. The Paiute and Shoshone native Americans called this area home, with the first piponeer settlement happening in 1848. The fabled Pony Expressed traveled through Murray on route to the eastern U.S., while in modern times, the Fashion Place Mall has become a hub for the mercantile business. Jeapordy champion Ken Jennings is from Murray, and the inspiration for the character Raymond Babbitt in the movie Rainman, was modeled after resident Kim Peek.
Manwill was founded by Vearl Manwill, who believed that customer service and innovation were two of the biggest considerations for serving the community. That ideal still lives on in Murray, with his son and grandson to this day.
